Bottom-up approach

Feeling Disconnected? You’re Not Alone

Do you ever feel like anxiety or depression keeps you from connecting with others—or even with yourself?

Maybe socializing feels exhausting, or reaching out just seems… impossible. Maybe putting your feelings into words feels like climbing a mountain. If that sounds familiar, I want you to know: you are not alone.

It’s Not Just “In Your Head”

Many people I work with tell me they feel disconnected from themselves and those around  them. They know something is “off,” but they can’t always explain it.

And that’s okay. Feeling this way doesn’t mean something is wrong with you—it means your  mind and body are trying to tell you something important.

Starting from the Body, Not Just the Mind

I’m Karen Cowling, and I work at Capability Psychology. Over the years, I’ve supported children, teens, adults, couples, and families who struggle with these exact feelings.

One thing I’ve seen make a real difference is what I call a bottom-up approach. Instead of  starting with talking about your thoughts and feelings, we begin by tuning into your body.

Your body holds clues about how you react to stress, anxiety, and life’s challenges. By noticing  and befriending those reactions, you can create a sense of safety and connection from the  inside out.

Why This Can Help

When we pay attention to the body first, it can:

• Help you feel less overwhelmed by emotions

• Make it easier to understand and express what you’re feeling

• Support deeper, more effective conversations in therapy

It’s about creating a solid foundation within yourself—so when you do talk about your  experiences, it feels safer, clearer, and more meaningful.

A Gentle Invitation

If this approach resonates with you, even just a little, reaching out for support can be the first  step toward reconnecting with yourself and others.

Small steps matter. Listening to your body, noticing how you feel, and getting guidance from a  somatic-informed therapist can help you feel more grounded, more understood, and more  connected to the people in your life. Gain more confidence and resilience using these methods,  coming home to you.

Want to explore this further?

I’d love to support you in discovering how a bottom-up approach could help you reconnect— both with yourself and the world around you. Please reach out to me at Capability Psychology.
