School Refusal & School Avoidance

Mornings that start with stomach aches and end in tears. A child who was fine last term and now won’t get in the car. A teenager who has quietly stopped going and won’t say why. If this is happening in your house, you’re likely exhausted, worried, and possibly getting advice from all directions that isn’t helping.

School refusal is not naughtiness, and it isn’t a parenting failure. It’s almost always distress that has nowhere else to go β€” and once you understand what’s driving it, it becomes something you can work on.

What It Can Look Like

  • Physical complaints on school mornings β€” stomach aches, headaches, nausea β€” that ease on weekends or holidays
  • Distress escalating the closer it gets to leaving, sometimes into panic
  • Getting to school but not being able to go in, or repeatedly needing to be collected
  • Attending but avoiding particular classes, the playground, or the tuckshop
  • A gradual slide β€” more days off, later starts, until attendance has quietly collapsed
  • Withdrawal, low mood, or reluctance to explain what’s wrong

What’s Usually Underneath It

School refusal is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and the useful work is in finding out what it’s a symptom of. Common contributors include:

  • Anxiety β€” separation anxiety, social anxiety, or generalised worry
  • Sensory overwhelm β€” noise, crowding and unpredictability in a school environment
  • Undiagnosed learning differences β€” where school has become a place of daily failure
  • Undiagnosed autism or ADHD β€” and the exhaustion of masking all day
  • Bullying or social difficulties β€” sometimes not disclosed for a long time
  • Low mood or depression
  • Change and transition β€” a new school, a new year level, a family change
  • Past distressing experiences connected to school

Often it’s more than one of these at once, which is part of why simple solutions tend not to work.

How We Help

We start by understanding the specific pattern in your family β€” what happens, when, and what makes it better or worse. From there our psychologists work with the young person on the underlying difficulty, whether that’s anxiety, sensory needs, social skills or something else, while also working with you on what’s helpful at home in the meantime.

Where it’s useful, we’ll liaise with the school β€” with your consent β€” because a graded return usually needs the school on board with the plan. Where an undiagnosed learning difference or neurodevelopmental difference seems to be part of the picture, an assessment can be the thing that unlocks the right supports.

We’re not going to hand you a checklist and send you off. This work takes time, and the aim is sustainable attendance rather than one difficult morning survived.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I make my child go to school?

There’s no single answer, and it depends heavily on what’s driving the avoidance and how distressed your child is. Generally, prolonged absence makes return harder β€” but forcing a child into a situation they find genuinely unsafe rarely works either. This is exactly the kind of thing we work through with families, based on your specific circumstances.

Will you talk to the school?

Yes, with your consent. A coordinated approach between home, school and clinician is usually far more effective than any one of those working alone.

My child won’t talk to anyone. Can you still help?

Yes. Parent-only sessions are a legitimate and often effective starting point β€” we can work with you on understanding and responding to what’s happening, and think together about how to bring your child in when they’re ready.

Do I need a referral?

No formal referral is required. If your GP has provided a Mental Health Care Plan, let us know and we’ll confirm any Medicare rebates that may apply.

How much does it cost?

Costs vary depending on the clinician and what’s involved. We offer a free intake call to talk through your situation, explain the options and give you clear pricing before you commit to anything.
