Emotional Regulation Support

Emotional regulation is the ability to notice what you’re feeling, make sense of it, and respond in a way that works for you — rather than being swept along by it. It’s a skill, not a personality trait, and like any skill it can be built with the right support.

For a child, difficulty with regulation might look like meltdowns that seem to come from nowhere, or an inability to recover once upset. For a teenager, it might be anger that flares fast or feelings that swing hard. For an adult, it can be a sense of being permanently on edge, or shutting down entirely. All of these are workable.

What Difficulty With Regulation Can Look Like

  • Big emotional reactions that seem out of proportion to what triggered them
  • Taking a long time to settle after becoming upset or overwhelmed
  • Meltdowns or shutdowns, particularly after school or in busy environments
  • Difficulty identifying or naming what’s being felt
  • Trouble with transitions, changes of plan, or unexpected events
  • Sensory overwhelm — noise, crowds, textures or light tipping things over the edge
  • Avoiding situations because of how they might feel

None of this means someone is being difficult. More often it means their nervous system is working hard, and they haven’t yet been given tools that suit how their brain and body actually work.

Two Disciplines, One Goal

Emotional regulation sits at the meeting point of psychology and occupational therapy, and we’re able to offer both under one roof.

Psychology

Our psychologists focus on the emotional and cognitive side — understanding what’s driving the responses, building awareness of internal states, developing coping strategies, and working through any underlying anxiety, trauma or low mood contributing to it. Approaches include CBT, ACT and DBT-informed skills, adapted to age.

Occupational Therapy (Springwood)

Our OTs work with the sensory and physical side — how the body takes in and processes information, interoception (the ability to read internal body signals like hunger, tension or a racing heart), and practical environmental changes at home, school or work. This can include calm-down plans, sensory strategies and movement-based approaches.

For some people one discipline is enough. For others — particularly neurodivergent children and teens — the two together are considerably more effective than either alone.

A Neuro-Affirming Approach

We’re not aiming to make anyone appear calmer for other people’s comfort. The goal is genuine self-understanding and a set of strategies that actually help the person — including permission to use accommodations, take breaks, and regulate in ways that work for their nervous system rather than masking. This matters particularly for autistic and ADHD clients, where suppressing regulation needs usually makes things worse over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do you support?

Children, teens and adults. The approach differs considerably by age — play-based and parent-supported for younger children, more collaborative for teens and adults.

Should we see a psychologist or an occupational therapist?

If sensory factors seem to be involved, or the difficulty shows up most in daily routines and environments, OT is often the better starting point. If anxiety, mood or past experiences seem central, psychology usually is. If you’re not sure, our free intake call is exactly for working that out — and we can always adjust.

Is Occupational Therapy available at Browns Plains?

Our OT team is based at Springwood, and travels within 10km of the clinic for home, kindy and school visits. Psychology support is available at both Springwood and Browns Plains.

Can this be funded through NDIS?

We see NDIS participants who are plan-managed or self-managed. Get in touch and we can talk through how your plan applies.

How much does it cost?

Costs vary depending on the discipline and your circumstances. We offer a free intake call to talk through your situation, explain the options and give you clear pricing before you commit to anything.
