Speech Pathology in Springwood — Helping You Find Your Voice

Speech Pathology supports people across every stage of life — from a toddler’s first words through to swallowing support in later life. Communication sounds simple, but it touches so much: understanding others, expressing feelings, connecting socially, and taking part confidently in everyday life. Our speech pathologists work alongside you or your child to build the skills and confidence to communicate in ways that matter to your life.

What We Support

Speech Sounds & Articulation

If sounds come out muddled, speech is hard to understand, or talking feels slow or effortful, our team can help identify what’s going on — from speech sound delay through to apraxia and dysarthria — and build a plan tailored to the individual.

Language & Communication

We support both understanding language (following directions, processing conversation) and using language (vocabulary, sentence building, expressing thoughts and feelings) — for children with developmental delay and adults navigating changes after illness or injury alike.

Social Communication

Reading non-verbal cues, taking turns in conversation, and adapting communication style to different people and situations — we help build the tools for social communication to feel easier and more natural.

Fluency & Stuttering

From a young child in the early stages of stuttering to a teen or adult wanting more confidence and ease in their speech, we offer assessment and tailored support at any stage.

AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication)

For anyone who needs more than spoken words to communicate — from key word sign and picture systems through to AAC apps like Proloquo and TD Snap — we help find and build skills with the right tool for the person.

Literacy Support

Reading, writing and spelling all draw on the same language foundations. We help build phonological awareness and support reading comprehension, writing and spelling.

Feeding & Swallowing (Dysphagia)

Difficulty eating or drinking safely can follow a stroke, illness, surgery or disability. We assess swallowing safety and provide diet modification advice, mealtime plans and rehabilitation to support safe, comfortable eating.

School Readiness

Following instructions, telling a story in order, and communicating needs to teachers and peers — all draw on speech and language skills. An assessment can help identify what extra support might smooth the transition to school or a new school year.

Who We See

Children — including late talkers, children who are hard to understand, and neurodivergent children (autistic and/or ADHD), as well as those with cerebral palsy, chromosomal conditions or Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Adults — including people navigating communication changes after stroke, acquired brain injury, Parkinson’s or dementia.

Speech Pathology Assessments

Our speech pathologists draw on clinical observation, informal assessment and formal standardised tools to build a genuine understanding of someone’s communication, swallowing or literacy — their strengths as well as their challenges — and to provide clear recommendations for therapy or further support.

We assess speech sounds, language, fluency, literacy, social communication and AAC needs for children, and provide adult communication, cognitive-communication and swallowing assessments too. To see what each assessment covers, the report you’ll receive, and fees and availability, visit our dedicated Speech & Language Assessments page.

What to Expect

Your first visit includes a thorough case history and initial assessment, followed by standardised assessment where needed, and collaborative goal-setting so therapy is built around what matters most to you or your family. Sessions are available face-to-face at our Springwood clinic, via Telehealth, or in your home, kindy or school (within approximately 10km of Springwood).

Psychology, Speech Pathology & Occupational Therapy — All Under One Roof

One of the biggest advantages of coming to Capability is that our Speech Pathology, Psychology and Occupational Therapy teams all work from the same Springwood clinic. Communication and wellbeing are closely linked — roughly 40% of young people with mental health concerns also have a communication disorder — so when a child needs more than one kind of support, it makes a real difference to have clinicians who share the same building, the same values and, with your consent, the same conversations about your child.

For families, that means less repeating your story, fewer separate waitlists to chase, and care that genuinely pulls in the same direction. If your child would benefit from speech pathology alongside psychology or occupational therapy, we can coordinate it all here, together — rather than sending you across three different providers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a speech pathologist?

No referral is required to book — you can self-refer at any time. If you have a referral from a GP, paediatrician or other health professional, we’re happy to liaise with them directly.

Is speech pathology covered by NDIS or Medicare?

We see both NDIS-funded clients (plan- and self-managed) and private clients, and clients with a GP Chronic Disease Management plan may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. See our fees and funding page for current rates.

What ages do you see?

All ages — from toddlers through to older adults.

Do you offer home, kindy or school visits?

Yes, within approximately 10km of our Springwood clinic. Telehealth is also available.

How do I know if my child needs a speech pathology assessment?

If your child is a late talker, hard to understand, has difficulty with sentences or storytelling, or struggles socially or emotionally with communication, an assessment can help clarify what support would help. You can read more on our Speech & Language Assessments page.
