Trauma & EMDR Therapy

If something difficult has happened to you — recently, or a long time ago — and it’s still affecting how you feel, sleep, or move through daily life, you don’t have to carry it alone. Our psychologists provide trauma-informed care, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), for adults and teens across our Springwood and Browns Plains clinics.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma can come from a single distressing event or from ongoing difficult experiences over time. However it happened, it can leave a lasting mark — flashbacks, anxiety, trouble sleeping, feeling on edge, avoiding certain places or people, or simply not feeling like yourself. There’s no “right” way to respond to trauma, and there’s no timeline you need to be on. Whatever brought you here, we’re glad you reached out.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy originally developed for PTSD and now used for a wide range of trauma-related difficulties. It works a little differently to talk therapy — rather than needing to describe every detail of what happened, EMDR uses guided eye movements (or similar bilateral stimulation) while you briefly focus on a difficult memory. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory so it feels less distressing and less “stuck,” while you stay grounded and supported throughout.

Many people find EMDR gentler than they expected, precisely because it doesn’t require going over every detail out loud. Your psychologist will always work at your pace and explain each step before it happens.

Who We Support

We work with adults and teens experiencing the effects of:

  • Single-incident trauma (accidents, medical trauma, assault, sudden loss)
  • Complex or developmental trauma (difficult childhood experiences, long-term stress)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Trauma connected to grief, relationship harm, or workplace experiences

What to Expect

Your first session is about building safety and understanding your story — not diving straight into difficult material. We’ll talk through what’s brought you in, what you’re hoping for, and whether EMDR or another trauma-informed approach feels right for you. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to, and you’re always in control of the pace.

Our Approach

Trauma-informed care means we prioritise your sense of safety and choice at every step. We work collaboratively, at a pace that feels manageable, and with a calm, non-judgemental approach — because healing happens best when you feel genuinely supported, not rushed.

Available at Springwood & Browns Plains

Trauma-informed psychology and EMDR sessions are available at both our Springwood and Browns Plains clinics, with telehealth options available for talk-based sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?

No. EMDR in particular doesn’t require you to describe the traumatic event in detail for it to work. Your psychologist will explain the process clearly and you’ll always stay in control of what you share.

How many sessions does EMDR take?

This varies from person to person and depends on what you’re working through. Some people notice a shift after a handful of sessions; more complex or long-standing trauma may take longer. Your psychologist will discuss a realistic timeline with you after your first session.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to start?

No referral is required to book, though a GP Mental Health Care Plan may make you eligible for Medicare rebates. You don’t need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma-informed therapy or EMDR.

Is telehealth available for trauma therapy?

Yes, talk-based trauma support is available via phone or video. EMDR is generally best suited to in-person sessions, and your psychologist can talk you through what’s right for your situation.
