Child Psychology

Childhood comes with big feelings, new challenges, and a lot of growing to do — and sometimes children need a bit of extra support to navigate it all. Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, big emotions, friendships, school, or a recent change at home, our child psychologists are here to help them feel understood, supported and more confident in themselves.

We offer child psychology at both our Springwood and Browns Plains clinics, with a warm, play-based and neuro-affirming approach tailored to your child’s age, personality and needs.

How We Can Help

Our child psychologists work with children and their families around a wide range of experiences, including:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Emotional regulation and big feelings
  • Behavioural challenges
  • School refusal or difficulty settling into school
  • Friendship and social difficulties
  • Adjusting to family changes (separation, new siblings, moving house)
  • Grief and loss
  • Low self-esteem and confidence
  • Support alongside an ADHD or autism diagnosis
  • Trauma-informed support

Our Approach

Children don’t always have the words to explain what’s going on for them — so our sessions often use play, art, stories and other creative approaches alongside age-appropriate talking therapy. This helps children feel comfortable and gives them a natural way to explore their thoughts and feelings.

We take a strengths-based, neuro-affirming approach that respects each child’s individual way of experiencing the world. Rather than focusing on “fixing” behaviour, we aim to understand what’s underneath it and build genuine skills and confidence from there.

We also know that supporting a child usually means supporting the whole family. We work closely with parents and carers — offering guidance, strategies, and regular check-ins — so the progress made in session carries through to home and school life.

What to Expect

  • Initial consultation — usually with a parent or carer, to understand your child’s history, strengths and current challenges
  • Ongoing sessions — tailored to your child, often using play-based and creative techniques alongside age-appropriate strategies
  • Parent check-ins — regular updates and practical strategies you can use at home
  • Collaboration with schools — where helpful, and with your consent, we can liaise with teachers or school support staff

Fees & Funding

Session fees vary depending on your psychologist’s experience and registration. If your child has a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. NDIS participants (plan-managed and self-managed) are also welcome. See our Pricing page for a full breakdown, or get in touch and we’ll talk you through your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age range do you see?

Our child psychologists typically work with children from around 5 years through to early adolescence. For older teens, our team page can help you find the right clinician.

Do I need to be in the room during sessions?

This depends on your child’s age, comfort, and the nature of the session. Your psychologist will talk this through with you and adjust based on what works best for your child.

Will you assess my child for ADHD or Autism?

Yes — we offer dedicated Psychology Assessments for ADHD, Autism, cognitive and learning profiles at our Springwood clinic. Ongoing child psychology support can run alongside or independently of an assessment.

Do you offer telehealth for children?

Many of our psychologists offer telehealth sessions for children, though in-person sessions are often preferred for younger children who benefit from play-based approaches. We’re happy to talk through what will suit your child best.
