OT and Psychology:

How they work together

You may be wondering, “Why did my Occupational therapist refer me to a psychologist – or vice versa to work on the same goal?”. You would not be alone, and it is a question I often get asked as an occupational therapist. The answer simply is we may be working on the same goal but using different methods and tools that complement one another and can help you achieve your goal quicker.

As an occupational therapist, I often refer kids to psychology when I notice other factors may be at play such as anxiety, depression or an unknown barrier that is impacting ability to engage in therapy. A psychologist can support emotional and social wellbeing and help individuals understand them self.

On the other hand, many of the referrals I receive from psychologist are to help those who are neurodiverse and could benefit from education and strategies to modify their environment, understand their sensory profile and help recognise their internal states.

A case example:

Family and child have goal of improving emotional regulation and participation in the
classroom.
As an OT, my intervention would focus on the environment and functional supports. This
may include reviewing the classroom environment and setup, provide education to
classroom teacher and parents on ways to modify the environment and completing a
sensory profile to find out potential triggers but also strategies to help the child stay
regulated.
A psychologist intervention however would work on the child’s internal experience. They may
support a child to understand and manage anxiety, develop emotional awareness and
support their emotional and social wellbeing.
While the goal is shared, each profession approaches it through a different clinical lens,
which ultimately leads to better, more meaningful outcomes.
Still not sure, please feel free to call up our friendly team – we are always happy to help and
