An experienced ADHD psychologist can offer psychological therapy and personalised strategies to assist in symptom management and enhance quality of life. Examples include:

  • Coping Skills: Managing impulsivity and regulating emotions, such as mindfulness practices, relaxation exercises, and therapy aimed at challenging negative or unhelpful thought patterns.

A psychiatrist can prescribe stimulant medications to help alleviate ADHD symptoms in both adults and children.

Autism

Approximately 1 in 150 Australians are Autistic. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) alters individuals’ interactions with others and their perception of the world. There are numerous assessment and management choices accessible for Autistic individuals.

Click to learn more

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental condition that influences individuals’ interactions with their surroundings. It’s important to note that Autism isn’t classified as a mental health issue or an intellectual disability, though some individuals with Autism may also experience such challenges. Moreover, the experiences and hurdles encountered by individuals with Autism vary greatly.

While Autism is typically diagnosed during infancy, some cases may not be identified until later stages of life. A delayed diagnosis can have adverse effects on an individual’s mental health, education, development, and social relationships. Hence, early diagnosis is crucial, as it enables individuals to access necessary treatment and support to enhance communication, socialisation, and life skills, thereby fostering independence and a high quality of life.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder encounter difficulties in the following key areas:

  1. Social communication and interaction with others
  2. Restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests

Children with Autism may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Challenges in interacting and communicating with others
  • Narrow interests, such as fixation on specific toys
  • Repetitive behaviors, like body-rocking or hand-flapping
  • Sensory sensitivities, resulting in being easily stressed or upset by particular sounds and having selective eating habits.

Autism Awareness Australia highlights several signs commonly observed by adults before recognising they may have autism, including:

  • Feeling like they don’t belong
  • Struggling with understanding figurative language or taking things literally
  • Heightened sensitivity to their surroundings
  • Being straightforward or blunt in conversation
  • Sensation of being out of place or feeling like they were born in the wrong era
  • Feeling they lack the “social handbook” and understanding of social expectations.

Additionally, signs in adults may include:

  • Speech and language difficulties
  • Intellectual disability
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Attention issues
  • Hyperactivity
  • Epilepsy
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Challenges with both fine and gross motor skills.

Embarking on the journey to obtain a diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder marks a pivotal step toward securing the necessary support for an improved quality of life. Receiving a diagnosis can instill a sense of assurance and relief, fostering a deeper understanding of oneself. Additionally, diagnosis opens doors to accessing financial and practical assistance, such as eligibility for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and potential funding for mental health services through Medicare, along with workplace or educational support.

Should your physician suspect Autism, they will typically refer you to a psychiatrist or psychologist specialised in Autism for further evaluation. Autism assessment and diagnosis are best conducted by professionals with adequate training and familiarity with Autism. At Capability Psychology we have psychologist who can assess Autism, utilising a neuroaffirming approach.

The assessment process may entail:

  • Conducting interviews with individuals familiar with the person from various perspectives
  • Observing the individual across different settings or gathering information regarding their characteristics in various contexts
  • Exploring relevant family, school, and other pertinent history
  • Utilising evidence-based screening tools

In addition to clinical evaluation, psychiatrists or psychologists may employ standardised screening and assessment instruments. Cognitive assessments may also be administered to supplement the diagnostic process.

Upon diagnosis, Autism is categorised into different levels of support needs according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5):

  • Level 1 – Requiring support
  • Level 2 – Requiring substantial support
  • Level 3 – Requiring very substantial support.

Individuals with Autism encounter diverse experiences shaped by various factors. Therefore, treatment approaches are customised to each person and their unique needs to achieve optimal outcomes. Numerous treatment and management strategies are available for individuals diagnosed with Autism, categorised into various areas.

Psychological: Psychological interventions assist individuals with Autism in addressing concurrent issues like anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Sessions also are held with principles of respect, autonomy, and authenticity, aiming to support individuals with Autism in embracing their unique neurological profiles. By centering on acceptance and empowerment rather than behavior modification, a neuroaffirming approach respects the individual’s inherent worth and agency in their journey towards psychological well-being.

Developmental: Developmental approaches concentrate on enhancing language and motor skills. These interventions typically involve language and speech therapy, aiming to improve communication and social abilities. Occupational therapy complements these efforts by fostering sensory motor development and promoting independence.

Educational: Organisations such as Autism Spectrum Australia offer educational programs designed to teach language and social skills while offering support to individuals with autism and their caregivers.

Pharmacological: While there are no medications specifically targeting Autism, pharmacotherapy can help alleviate co-occurring symptoms or conditions associated with Autism. Collaboration with a doctor or psychiatrist experienced in treating individuals with Autism is essential, as they can provide guidance and monitor medication efficacy and potential side effects for both the individual and their family.

Other supports may be available. Ensuring that the supports you choose are evidence-based is important.

Autism Treatment & Management Strategies

While the NDIS provides funding for people with Autism, not everyone with Autism is eligible.  NDIS assesses the level of support you require to determine whether you are eligible. NDIS participants receive a personalised NDIS funding plan to help them fund the required support and services.

To find out whether you’re eligible or request access phone NDIS on 1800 800 110 or visit their website https://www.ndis.gov.au

Assertiveness Training

Engaging in assertiveness training enables individuals to express their needs and viewpoints with clarity and confidence. Acquiring assertiveness skills can enhance relationships, alleviate stress and anxiety, and facilitate more effective goal achievement.

Click to learn more

Learning assertiveness is a valuable skill that empowers individuals to communicate honestly and directly without causing harm to others’ feelings. It fosters self-confidence and minimises the likelihood of conflict, thereby enriching both personal and professional relationships.

Contrary to common misconceptions, assertiveness does not entail aggression or confrontation. Instead, it involves expressing feelings, opinions, and needs respectfully while remaining receptive to the other party’s perspective and requirements.

While some believe that aggression secures their desires, such behavior often damages relationships in the long run. Conversely, passive conduct may lead to feeling neglected in addressing personal needs and emotions.

Assertiveness serves as a balanced approach between passivity and aggression. Its advantages include:

  • Enhanced self-awareness and understanding of others
  • Strengthened relationships
  • Decreased conflict and associated stress
  • Reduced anxiety levels
  • Elevated self-esteem
  • Increased effectiveness in achieving goals.

In assertiveness training, the fundamental principle is recognising each person’s entitlement to differing opinions and the freedom to express them. It involves clearly articulating personal desires and ideas while respecting others.

Assertive communication considers the needs and emotions of all parties involved, steering away from extremes of passivity or aggression. This approach preserves self-esteem, enhances the likelihood of fulfilling one’s needs without alienating others, and maintains relationships during conflicts.

Psychologists offer various techniques to complement assertive behaviour, aiding individuals in navigating challenging conversations or situations with finesse and productivity.

Assertiveness, a vital skill, often correlates negatively with anger, depression, and anxiety issues when lacking.

The process entails several fundamental steps alongside associated skills to refine communication effectiveness. Like any skill, assertiveness requires practice and patience to master.

Beyond verbal communication, assertiveness encompasses body language and maintaining composure. Learning techniques to remain calm and respond thoughtfully is crucial, and psychologists can offer guidance in acquiring these skills.

Trauma

Psychologists are highly trained professionals qualified to diagnose and treat Complex Trauma (C- PTSD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychological treatment may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

Click to learn more

Psychological trauma stems from exposure to an incident, a series of emotionally distressing or life-threatening events, that results in enduring adverse effects on an individual’s mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Instances and occurrences leading to psychological trauma encompass threatened or actual physical or sexual assault, childhood emotional abuse or neglect, acts of violence, disasters, motor vehicle accidents, and learning of a close family member or friend’s involvement in a traumatic event.

Responses to potentially traumatic experiences vary among individuals. While some recover well with support from loved ones and may not encounter long-term difficulties, others struggle to move forward, with trauma impeding their ability to cope or function normally. Prolonged reactions may include fluctuating emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and physical symptoms such as headaches or nausea.

Trauma symptoms manifest across emotional, physical, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions. Examples include:

Emotional Symptoms: Anxiety, panic, emotional numbness, depression, anger, and irritability.

Physical Symptoms: Hypervigilance, heightened startle response, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, and pain.

Behavioural Symptoms: Avoidance of triggers, social withdrawal, diminished interest in previously enjoyed activities.

Cognitive Symptoms: Confusion, intrusive thoughts and memories, nightmares, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems.

Psychologists are highly skilled professionals who possess the expertise to diagnose and address various mental health issues, including complex trauma (C- PTSD) and PTSD. Trauma treatment administered by psychologists may involve Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Additionally, incorporating body-based approaches like trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness aids in reconnecting the body and mind. In some cases, medication prescribed by a doctor, such as antidepressants, may complement trauma-focused psychological interventions.

Phases of Trauma Recovery

Trauma recovery unfolds as a phased process:

Phase 1 – Safety and Stabilisation

Establishing a sense of safety and cultivating healthy coping mechanisms form the cornerstone of this phase, where the main aim is to reduce stress and calm the nervous system. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, self-soothing, and grounding techniques are implemented to help achieve stability.

Phase 2 – Remembering and Grieving

During this phase, individuals confront the trauma by verbalising emotions and experiences, facilitating a deeper understanding and acceptance. Embracing and mourning trauma-related losses and providing avenues for emotional expression are integral components.

Phase 3 – Reconnecting and Integrating

Integration of traumatic memories with newfound coping strategies marks the culmination of this phase. Progress entails moving forward, rekindling hope, and nurturing robust support systems through reconnection with loved ones and communities.

Recovery unfolds uniquely for each individual, however there is a main focus on acceptance and adaptation rather than erasure of the traumatic experience. Practicing patience and self-compassion is vital throughout the healing journey.

If distressing trauma symptoms impede daily functioning and relationships, seeking assistance from a GP or psychologist is imperative. Commencing the journey toward trauma recovery is a step that can be taken at any point in time.

Relationship Counselling

Couples tend to seek assistance if they are struggling with managing conflict effectively, have experienced an affair or are wanting to strengthen their friendship. Through evidence-based couples therapy, couples can explore healthier conflict resolution strategies, strengthen their bond, enhance intimacy, work through betrayal and lay the groundwork for a lasting, loving relationship.

Click to learn more

Noticing early warning signs of relationship breakdown can help couples resolve conflict and seek relationship counselling.

  • Criticism: Attacking your partner’s character, trying to make yourself right and them wrong.
  • Defensiveness: Seeing yourself as the victim, making excuses, not listening etc.
  • Expressions of Contempt: Attacking the other through sarcasm, abuse, and body language such as sneering or rolling the eyes.
  • Stonewalling: Withdrawing through silence, brief answers or moving away.

Couples therapy offers numerous benefits to couples facing relationship challenges.

Enhanced communication skills are among the primary advantages couples gain from therapy. Effective communication serves as the cornerstone of healthy relationships, and couples counselling facilitates learning sustainable and respectful expression of needs. Guided exercises and communication techniques taught by a couples counsellor can help couples establish healthier communication patterns and break free from detrimental cycles of blame and defensiveness.

Additionally, couples counselling provides a neutral setting for partners to explore their emotions and concerns in a secure environment. Couple counsellors create a non-judgmental space where partners can openly express their feelings without fear of criticism or rejection. This safe and neutral environment fosters empathy and deeper understanding between partners, allowing them to build a stronger emotional connection, rebuild trust, and restore intimacy.

Couples therapy entails a series of sessions where you and your partner engage with a professional couples counsellor or therapist. The counsellor collaborates with both of you, guiding discussions and exercises tailored to address your specific needs and challenges.

Sessions are customised to your unique objectives, enabling exploration of underlying issues contributing to relationship difficulties. Throughout couples therapy, you and your partner acquire valuable tools and techniques to enhance communication and problem-solving skills.

The counsellor assists in identifying behaviour patterns that provoke conflict and offers guidance on recognising and altering these behaviours. By fostering mutual understanding, you and your partner can navigate conflicts and rebuild trust effectively.

What if my partner does not want couples counselling?

There are times when only one partner is interested in engaging in couples therapy. If this is the case, you can start by booking an individual appointment with a psychologist to work through your relationship issues. Positive change in one partner can lead to a positive impact for both partners in a relationship. As a result, your partner may feel more confident or comfortable about attending sessions as a couple. At times, if one of the partners has been attending sessions individually with a psychologist, the couple may need to seek couples counselling from a different therapist to avoid a conflict of interest.

The Gottman Method is an evidence-based couples therapy method developed by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman, renowned marriage and relationship counselling experts. Based on over 40 years of research, it is designed to help couples improve their relationships by strengthening their friendship, managing conflicts, and building a deeper emotional connection.

The Gottman Method provides support for couples at different phases of their relationship:

  • Couples struggling in their marriage or relationship
  • Couples’ uncertainty of the sustainability of their relationship
  • Couples who want to improve their closeness and bond
  • Pre-marriage counselling

What is the EFT approach in the couples counselling?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based couples therapy approach developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, a prominent expert in the field of relationship counseling. Grounded in decades of research, EFT is designed to help couples improve their relationships by focusing on emotions, attachment needs, and patterns of interaction. This method aims to strengthen emotional bonds, promote secure attachment, and create a more fulfilling and supportive relationship between partners.

Combining the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) offers a powerful approach to couples therapy. By integrating the insights of both methodologies, therapists can provide a comprehensive framework for enhancing relationships. The Gottman Method’s emphasis on friendship, conflict management, and emotional connection complements EFT’s focus on emotions, attachment, and relational patterns. Together, these approaches help couples build a stronger foundation of friendship, understand and address underlying emotional needs, and transform negative interaction cycles into positive dynamics.

Depression

Click to learn more

Typically, depression arises from a blend of various life events and individual factors, rather than stemming from a singular occurrence. Without adequate counselling for depression, it may escalate into substance abuse, estrangement from loved ones, and pose a risk of suicidal behaviour.

Depression Symptoms

A person may be depressed if they have experienced several of the symptoms below for long periods (more than two weeks):

  • Feeling down or sad
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Loss of motivation, enjoyment, and interest in doing things you normally enjoy
  • Low energy
  • Changes in sleep (difficulty sleeping or sleeping more than usual)

Psychologists offer treatment and support for depression recovery and relapse prevention. Most individuals typically observe improvement within two to six weeks following treatment initiation. If you are uncertain about experiencing depression, scheduling an appointment with your GP or psychologist is recommended.

While many individuals successfully recover from depressive episodes, some may encounter a relapse within the subsequent year. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain psychological support and acquire strategies for avoid its recurrence.

Psychologists specialising in depression relapse prevention assist clients in mastering daily mood monitoring, recognising early warning signs and triggers, and devising effective and proactive action plans to prevent or minimise its impact.

When formulating an action plan, psychologists often collaborate with individuals to identify avoidable triggers and strategise methods for circumventing them. However, recognising that some triggers are inevitable, the plan also encompasses strategies for pre, during, and post-trigger events to address depression relapse. This may involve employing mood management techniques, relaxation practices, distraction methods, engaging in enjoyable activities, and seeking support from friends and family.

In essence, psychologists collaborate with clients to equip them with the tools necessary for thwarting depression relapse.

Depression therapy services are accessible at Capability Psychology and are provided by our numerous qualified psychologists and therapists in our private practice.

Family Issues

Family Therapy, also known as Family Counselling, facilitates enhanced communication within families, resolution of conflicts, and effective problem-solving. It aids families in comprehending and managing unique family dynamics, fostering a more harmonious and functional home environment.

Click to learn more

Family Counselling offers support for families to enhance communication and resolve conflicts, typically facilitated by a trained psychologist. It operates on the premise that the behavior of each family member can influence the family unit as a whole, thus addressing individual issues can positively impact the entire family dynamic.

Sessions of Family Counselling may involve all immediate family members or select individuals, with the treatment plan tailored to address specific issues and accommodate each family’s unique circumstances. Often brief in duration, these sessions equip individuals with vital skills to strengthen familial bonds and navigate challenges with reduced stress. Moreover, the skills acquired during family counselling sessions can be applied long-term, extending beyond the duration of therapy.

Psychologists employ various evidence-based methods in family therapy, tailored to the unique challenges, dynamics, and goals of each family.

Here are some evidence-based methods commonly utilised by psychologists in family therapy:

Structural Family Therapy: This method centers on family structure, boundaries, and power dynamics. Psychologists assist family members in recognizing and altering negative interaction patterns to foster a more harmonious family system.

Cognitive-Behavioural Family Therapy: This approach targets negative thought patterns and behaviours contributing to family issues. Psychologists guide families in identifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs, cultivating healthier communication, and enhancing problem-solving skills.

Solution-Focused Brief Family Therapy: Focused on leveraging the strengths and resources within the family, this method helps set specific goals and devises practical strategies for achievement.

Emotionally-Focused Family Therapy: Emphasising emotional bonds among family members, this approach fosters strengthened connections through improved emotional expression and communication.

Narrative Family Therapy: This method aids family members in reframing negative experiences into more positive narratives, empowering them to develop constructive perspectives on their relationships.

These are some of the methods supported by research that effectively improve family relationships and reduce symptoms of mental health issues. A skilled psychologist or family therapist will tailor their approach to your family’s unique needs and circumstances.

Family counseling offers support to families navigating relationship issues with partners, children, or other members. This includes addressing marital conflicts, substance abuse, or mental health challenges affecting the entire family dynamic.

It serves as a valuable resource for families experiencing stress, conflict, or grief, equipping them with coping mechanisms to foster closer bonds. Common issues tackled in family therapy encompass communication breakdowns, behavioral concerns like aggression or substance misuse, and mental health conditions such as depression or eating disorders.

Family therapy can assist during life transitions like divorce or blended families, as well as trauma recovery from events like abuse or loss. Ultimately, it serves anyone seeking to enhance familial relationships, communication, and resilience in overcoming challenges.

Family therapy services are accessible at Capability Psychology, typically conducted through group sessions involving family members. These sessions are customised to address the unique needs of each family.

Grief Counselling

Grief is an innate reaction to various losses such as the passing of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a miscarriage, the departure of a pet, job loss, or significant life changes. Other forms of loss encompass children leaving home and infertility. While grief typically involves discomfort, acknowledging and permitting emotions to surface and pass can facilitate the healing process. Seeking support through Grief Counselling with a psychologist can be beneficial.

Click to learn more

Grief manifests uniquely for each individual, impacting emotions, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and physical health. Typical emotional responses encompass sadness, anger, shock, disbelief, denial, guilt, remorse, helplessness, blame, and even relief. Physically and behaviorally, grief may manifest as fatigue, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, appetite changes, and avoidance of reminders of the loss. Generally, the intensity of grief diminishes with time.

Grief follows no predetermined course. Some individuals prefer to express their emotions openly, while others keep them internalised. Activities that were once easy may become challenging, leading some to withdraw socially, while others seek solace in increased activity. The duration of grief varies; for some, it spans weeks or months, while for others, it extends over years.

People may experience grief due to the loss of:

  • A loved one
  • A beloved pet
  • A relationship, e.g. separation or divorce
  • Work, e.g. redundancy or retrenchment
  • A way of life
  • Good health, e.g. the diagnosis of a terminal illness, accident or disability
  • Pregnancy, miscarriage or infertility
  • Relocation, e.g., moving away or separating from family or friends, among others.

Complicated or prolonged grief disorder entails experiencing grief for an extended period or with heightened intensity. It becomes challenging to navigate daily life amidst the overwhelming loss, often described as emotional paralysis, hindering the ability to move forward.

Research indicates that 7% to 10% of bereaved adults grapple with persistent symptoms of prolonged or complicated grief. Additionally, approximately 5% to 10% of children and adolescents facing loss may develop depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or prolonged grief disorder.

Certain demographics, such as older adults or individuals with a history of bipolar disorder or depression, face a higher risk of developing prolonged grief disorder. Sudden or traumatic deaths of loved ones further elevate this risk.

Persistent sadness and disruptions in daily life warrant seeking support and professional assistance from a general practitioner or psychologist. Evidence-based psychological treatments are available for individuals experiencing complicated grief.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is often effective in alleviating symptoms of prolonged or complicated grief, including associated issues like insomnia. Other therapeutic approaches focus on accepting the loss and setting goals for a life without the loved one. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) help individuals navigate complex emotions, while mindfulness practices aid in managing overwhelming experiences.

Family Counselling or Therapy can aid grief-stricken families in fortifying bonds, enhancing communication, and mitigating psychological distress stemming from the loss.

Bereavement support groups offer valuable social connections, alleviating feelings of loneliness and the isolation often linked with prolonged grief disorder.

What is Insomnia?

Many of us have encountered difficulty sleeping at some stage. Yet, for some individuals, sleep disturbances persist, leading to frustration and significant impacts on daily functioning, quality of life, and even mental health issues like depression.

Insomnia is a prevalent experience among Australians, with around 10% of individuals experiencing at least mild symptoms at some point. It’s crucial to note that relying on sleeping pills is not a sustainable solution for overcoming insomnia in the long run.

If you find yourself grappling with sleep troubles, mood disturbances, restlessness in bed, or persistent fatigue upon waking, you might be experiencing insomnia. Seeking assistance from your GP is advisable, as they can provide guidance and potentially refer you to a specialist or psychologist for further support.

Insomnia can have many different causes. Some of these include:

  • Poor sleep habits (sleep hygiene)
  • Intake of caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, amphetamines
  • Mental health issues such as anxiety and worry, stress and burnout, and depression
  • Some prescribed drugs, for example, those to treat asthma or blood pressure
  • Medical issues, physical pain and other illnesses that cause discomfort
  • Grief and loss
  • Life stage — elderly people are more likely to have insomnia
  • Shift work

How Insomnia Affects You

If you are experiencing insomnia, you may:

  • Find it difficult to focus and concentrate on tasks
  • Find it difficult to remember simple things
  • Be irritable and moody due to the lack of sleep
  • Feel tired and sleepy during the day and prone to making mistakes

Learning healthy sleep habits and changing lifestyle factors that contribute to your insomnia is the first step to managing the problem. Some habits include:

  • Sleep hygiene

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are more common than you think and psychological treatment can help you overcome this anxiety disorder.

A panic attack is a sudden occurrence marked by intense feelings of fear and anxiety, accompanied by physical symptoms associated with anxiety. It typically emerges abruptly and involves a combination of bodily sensations and anxious thoughts.

Symptoms of a Panic Attack

People grappling with panic disorder often develop a fear of the physiological reactions triggered by the body’s innate alarm system, known as the fight-flight-freeze response, when it perceives a threat.

These panic symptoms stem from the body’s adaptations aimed at enhancing survival in the face of potential danger. For instance, heightened heart rate facilitates the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body. Likewise, sensations like nausea and dry mouth arise from diminished activity in the digestive system, redirecting energy to the fight-or-flight mechanisms. Initially, our attention instinctively scans for potential threats. However, in the absence of any external danger, we tend to interpret these bodily sensations catastrophically, fearing outcomes such as death, heart attacks, loss of control, or madness.

Panic episodes can leave you feeling exhausted. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Feelings of choking
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Feeling that you are not experiencing yourself or reality normally
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Fear of dying
  • Chills and hot flushes
  • Tingling in the fingers and toes

Psychological therapy administered by a qualified psychologist utilising evidence-backed approaches stands as an effective remedy for panic attacks and panic disorders. Such therapy aids individuals in comprehending panic attacks while equipping them with coping mechanisms.

Additionally, stress management, mindfulness-based practices, and relaxation techniques often complement therapy to alleviate panic attack symptoms.

At Capability Psychology, treatment options are provided by our therapists. Tailored to your specific needs, assessment and symptom management are administered through individual counselling sessions.

It’s crucial to select a psychologist who is experienced in working with panic attacks. Contact us and let us help you find the right fit.

PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a treatable disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event or a series of traumatic events or circumstances. Examples include natural disasters, serious accidents, terrorist acts, war, sexual or physical assault and bullying.

Click to learn more

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, known as PTSD, arises following exposure to a traumatic incident. Such events may encompass assault, both physical and sexual, encounters with natural disasters, or observing criminal acts. Treatment for PTSD commonly involves Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

While not all individuals exposed to traumatic events will exhibit trauma reactions, a portion may. Below are the common signs and symptoms to look for, although each person responds in their own unique ways there are similarities.

  • The predominant responses individuals undergo are fear and anxiety. Anxiety can manifest as a response to reminders of the trauma or emerge unexpectedly. Specific triggers, such as times of day, odors, locations, or activities, may evoke these fears and reactions.
  • After experiencing trauma, fear and anxiety manifest primarily through two avenues: re-living memories and heightened arousal, characterised by being easily startled or feeling jumpy. Common occurrences include flashbacks (visual recollections), nightmares, and persistent distressing thoughts and emotions throughout the day.
  • You may have difficulty concentrating, following conversations and remembering.
  • Other common reactions include agitation, feeling jittery, trembling, being easily startled, heightened arousal, feeling overly alert, and experiencing difficulty sleeping.
  • Avoidance is a protective strategy aimed at things perceived as dangerous or overwhelming, leading to the avoidance of people, places, or things reminiscent of the trauma.
  • Common reactions to trauma include general feelings of sadness and being down. These may encompass emotions such as hopelessness, despair, crying spells, thoughts of self-harm, feeling that life is not worth living, and a lack of importance placed on future plans.
  • Increased use of alcohol or substances are also common reactions to trauma.
  • During the trauma, you may have felt threatened and experienced a sense of losing control over your emotions, body, or life. This intensity can be so profound that you may feel as if you are “losing it.”
  • Feelings of guilt and shame are often present, possibly related to actions taken or not taken to survive. You may find yourself second-guessing your reactions and blaming yourself for past events in retrospect.
  • A feeling of anger is also a very common reaction to trauma, often associated with a strong sense of unfairness or injustice stemming from being the victim of a terrible experience.
  • As a result of trauma, self-image can suffer. You may have negative thoughts about yourself or tell yourself things like “I should have been tougher.”
  • It’s common to experience disruptions in relationships with others following a traumatic event. These disruptions often stem from feelings of sadness, fear, and anger. Coping with these negative emotions may involve withdrawal or feeling that expected support is lacking.
  • A decline in physical affection and sexual interest might occur, particularly among those experiencing depression or sadness. Emotional and sexual intimacy might feel uncomfortable as it can evoke feelings of vulnerability, trigger flashbacks, or induce distressing emotions.
  • Recent traumas can remind you of past traumas.  Once a negative experience comes to mind it may provoke memories of other negative experiences.

Many of the common reactions to trauma are interconnected and can interact with each other, intensifying the overall response. As you undergo treatment and process these experiences, symptoms should become less distressing.

Trauma therapy with a psychologist can help you overcome the effects of psychological trauma. Your psychologist will tailor the treatment to meet your individual needs.

Designed to assist you in working through your traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment, trauma therapy aims to help you process your emotions, develop coping skills, and learn to manage your symptoms. Additionally, it can aid in creating a sense of resilience and empowerment, enabling you to move forward with your life.

Types of Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy can encompass various evidence-based methods, such as Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

CBT focuses on identifying negative thoughts and beliefs, replacing them with more positive and realistic ones, and graded exposure to feared stimuli. It involves setting structured goals and working towards them. Additionally, CBT aids in developing coping skills and managing PTSD symptoms.

EMDR Therapy utilises rapid eye movements to process traumatic memories, aiming to reprocess them and establish new, positive associations. Highly effective in treating PTSD and other trauma-related disorders, EMDR Therapy facilitates the development of healthier responses to past experiences.

Benefits of Trauma Therapy

There are many benefits to trauma therapy, including:

Symptom Reduction: Trauma therapy can aid in alleviating the symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such as anxiety and depression. Additionally, it facilitates the acquisition and refinement of lifelong coping skills.

Improved Relationships: Trauma can impact your capacity to establish and sustain healthy relationships. Through trauma therapy with a psychologist, you can acquire skills in effective communication, setting boundaries, and cultivating healthy relationships.

Increased Self-Esteem and Overall Wellbeing: Trauma can leave you feeling disconnected from other people. Trauma therapy with a psychologist can help you develop self-confidence and self-worth.

At Capability Psychology, treatment options are provided by our therapists for trauma. Tailored to your specific needs, assessment and symptom management are administered through individual counselling sessions.

Postnatal Depression

Both women and men can experience perinatal mental health issues. Here is some information about perinatal mental health for new and expecting parents.

Click to learn more

Significant life events, even positive ones, don’t always bring complete joy. Welcoming a baby is among the most significant life changes, demanding rapid adjustments in various aspects. For women, adaptation involves not only changes in their bodies but also shifts in sleep patterns, daily routines, financial responsibilities, and relationships.

The period encompassing pregnancy and the first year after childbirth is termed the Perinatal Period. During this time, women are more susceptible to experiencing emotional and mental health challenges, which can also impact their partners and families. Therefore, it’s crucial to assess one’s well-being and that of their family members.

If you’re uncertain about coping with adjustments during the perinatal period, consider contacting a therapist who can help.

  • Perinatal Anxiety
  • Perinatal Depression
  • Bipolar Disorder in the Perinatal Period
  • Puerperal Psychosis.

Known Risk Factors:

  • Past or previous mental health problems
  • Previous or current abuse (sexual, physical or psychological)
  • Previous or current drug and/or alcohol use
  • Recent life stressors (e.g. moving house, financial worries, relationship problems, IVF, multiple births)
  • Lack of practical and emotional support
  • Poor relationship with your own mother.

Perinatal mental health issues can affect both women and men. While anxiety and depression are commonly reported among men during this period, the prevalence isn’t notably higher unless their partners are also experiencing perinatal depression.

What You Can Do About Perinatal Issues?

Prevention

If you’re not currently facing perinatal mental health issues but identify risk factor(s), seeking professional and personal support, along with adjusting routines to mitigate physical and emotional stress, can be beneficial.

Intervention

Should you recognize any perinatal mental symptoms, prioritizing professional assistance is crucial. This could involve medication, consultations with a psychologist, and/or other interventions, such as modifying working hours or undergoing training for parenting skills.

Parenting Skills Training

Learning practical and effective parenting skills may also be helpful, and the following are some of the most commonly introduced programs:

Self-Esteem

If you consistently criticise yourself, label yourself harshly, perceive yourself as having low value, or struggle to believe in or accept yourself, you may be experiencing low self-esteem. While occasional dips in confidence are normal, persistent negative self-talk and self-perception can indicate deeper issues with self-worth.

Click to learn more

Low self-esteem can spiral into a self-perpetuating issue, as it predisposes individuals to anticipate failure, refrain from attempting new endeavours (which could result in success), and misinterpret feedback on their performance—focusing solely on shortcomings rather than achievements. These ramifications can permeate various aspects of life, encompassing work, self-care, relationships, and leisure activities. Furthermore, low self-esteem can be linked with complications such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other related issues.

Some of the signs of low self-esteem include:

  • Thinking other people are better than you
  • Anxiety and avoidance due to fear of failing
  • Becoming overly upset by criticism
  • Feeling sad, ashamed, angry or worthless
  • Negative self-talk and being critical of yourself
  • Blaming yourself
  • Placing focus on your negatives, ignoring your achievements

Low self-esteem can detrimentally impact relationships. Individuals with low self-esteem may react strongly to constructive feedback or criticism, leading them to avoid situations where they fear judgment or comparison. Consequently, they may isolate themselves or withdraw from social interactions.

Moreover, low self-esteem can contribute to body image concerns and substance abuse as coping mechanisms to alleviate discomfort or seek acceptance within social circles.

Building self-esteem starts with understanding where the problems develop. Following this, treatment with a psychologist can be focussed on working on reducing harmful self-criticism, challenging expectations of failure, changing patterns of behaviour which support low self-esteem, experiential work such as imagery to challenge critical figures from your past, building self-care, self-compassion and exercise, which can improve your mood.

At Capability Psychology, treatment options are provided by our therapists. Tailored to your specific needs, assessment and symptom management are administered through individual counselling sessions.

Stress & Burnout

Click to learn more

Stress is a prevalent aspect of daily life for many individuals. It encompasses any change or demand necessitating adaptation, ranging from meeting work deadlines to experiencing significant life crises like relationship breakdowns or major personal upheavals.

Several common external stressors include:

  • Major life events and transitions, such as the loss of a loved one or divorce
  • Family illness or health concerns
  • Work or school-related challenges, financial strains, or relationship difficulties

At times, stress can also be triggered by underlying issues like anxiety, depression, or self-criticism.

Stress affects both mental and physical well-being. When confronted with stressors, the body releases stress hormones like adrenaline, initiating the “fight or flight” response—an adaptive mechanism designed to cope with danger.

In response to a brief period of stress, the brain initiates a series of physiological changes known as the “fight-flight” response. These alterations include familiar sensations such as heightened heart and breathing rates, muscle tension, and perhaps even a sensation of “butterflies” in the stomach. These are natural bodily adjustments aimed at assisting us in confronting challenging circumstances.

However, when stress becomes chronic or is compounded by consecutive stressful events without adequate recovery time, various symptoms may arise. These can include mood swings, disrupted sleep patterns, gastrointestinal discomfort, heightened anxiety, irritability, difficulty focusing, fatigue, and a persistent sense of being overwhelmed, drained, or lacking in confidence. This constellation of symptoms characterises burnout: a state marked by profound mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion.

Experiencing emotional burnout can be draining, adversely affecting both your general well-being and your relationships. Some signs and symptoms of burnout include:

  • Persistent feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or inability to manage tasks
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Headaches and muscle tension
  • Challenges in executing routine activities
  • Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
  • Feeling emotionally numb or empty
  • Decreased motivation in work, relationships, and leisure pursuits
  • Irritability, mood swings, or heightened anger
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Withdrawal from social connections with friends and family
  • Resorting to alcohol or other substances as coping mechanisms

Treating Stress and Burnout

Recognising the signs of burnout marks the initial stride toward recovery.

Commencing conversations with trusted individuals serves as an effective starting point. Sharing your feelings with someone can initiate a sense of relief and improvement in your well-being. Additionally, seeking guidance from mental health professionals such as general practitioners or psychologists is advisable.

Psychologists employ various techniques to assist you in managing stress more effectively:

  • Techniques like body awareness, relaxation strategies, and mindfulness can aid in addressing physiological symptoms.
  • Evidence-based therapies can target unhelpful thought patterns that often arise from and perpetuate stress reactions.
  • Problem-solving, assertiveness training, goal-setting, and time management techniques offer strategies to confront environmental stressors directly.
  • Embracing lifestyle modifications and engaging in regular exercise can facilitate recovery and help prevent future burnout episodes.

At Capability Psychology, treatment options are provided by our therapists. Tailored to your specific needs, assessment and symptom management are administered through individual counselling sessions.

The Cognitive (Intelligence Assessment) WISC/WAIS Assessment – Click to learn more

The Cognitive (Intelligence Assessment) WISC/WAIS Assessment

Cognitive assessment (or intelligence testing) is used to determine an individual’s general thinking and reasoning abilities, more commonly known as IQ. There are several reasons why you may need a cognitive assessment or report from a psychologist, including:

  • To obtain an accurate profile of an individual’s IQ
  • To assist in considering a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism
  • For NDIS purposes
  • Court reports (this is generally called a capability assessment)

Court reports (this is generally called a capability assessment)

Children and Teens

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) is the “gold standard” intelligence test to measure a child’s intellectual ability and cognitive performance. It evaluates a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and can identify giftedness, intellectual disabilities, learning disorders, and the impact of brain injuries.

The WISC can identify the intellectual strengths and weaknesses of a student. Inform decisions regarding eligibility for educational services, educational placement, or diagnosis of a specific learning disability. It can also be used to guide planning for other therapeutic interventions.

Adults

The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) measures intellectual performance as a multidimensional construct. The test contains four sub-scales that assess different types of intellectual functioning. These subscales can help identify strengths and weaknesses. Certain patterns of results can indicate underlying problems or inefficiencies.

A full-scale IQ score can also be calculated. Your IQ score is a representation of how you perform compared to other people like you. It has a ‘bell curve’ distribution, with a most common score of 100 (therefore an IQ of 100 is considered to be average intelligence). Most people (about 70% of the population) have an IQ that sit between 85 and 115.

The Functional Assessment – Click to learn more

The Functional Assessment

The results of the functional assessment show areas of strength and weakness which can help you to maximize your learning, further enhance areas of strength, and compensate or develop areas of weakness.  The overall scores are often used by organisations (such as Centrelink) to determine if someone qualifies for additional support, programs, or even payments. The results of this test cannot guarantee any of these things but may help a person access different services.

People often say that functional testing helps them to:

  • Better understand their own abilities
  • Focus on areas of strength and develop their potential
  • Understand what to do to overcome barriers to progress at work and home
  • Receive appropriate support from the government or other services
