Sensory & Emotional Regulation

Does your child struggle with big emotions or sensory overload?
Our Sensory and Emotional Regulation Occupational Therapy sessions at The Capability Psychology & Wellness help children understand their bodies, emotions, and responses—so they can navigate daily life with confidence and calm.

Click to learn more

🧠 What Is Sensory & Emotional Regulation?

Sensory regulation refers to how our brains process sensory information—like sound, movement, texture, or light. Some children are oversensitive (avoiding sensations), while others are undersensitive (seeking constant movement or touch).

Emotional regulation involves recognising, understanding, and managing feelings in healthy ways.
When these two systems work in harmony, children can focus better, connect with others, and participate more fully in life.

🌻 How Occupational Therapy Supports Regulation

Our OT sessions help children:

  • Recognise their body’s signals (e.g., “I feel too wiggly” or “I need a break”).
  • Learn self-soothing and grounding techniques.
  • Create calm-down plans that work at home and school.
  • Strengthen focus and resilience through sensory play and movement.
  • Develop emotional vocabulary and problem-solving skills.

We often integrate mindfulness, breathing exercises, and sensory circuits to help children find balance.

🪶 A Warm, Holistic Approach

We work closely with families and educators to ensure strategies are practical and consistent across environments.
Our collaboration with our psychologists means children receive emotional and behavioural support that addresses the whole person, not just symptoms.

“We don’t aim to remove emotions—we help children understand and manage them.”

Fine & Gross Motor Skills

Strong motor skills are the foundation of independence.
At The Capability Psychology & Wellness, our occupational therapists help children and teens develop the physical coordination and strength needed for learning, play, and everyday activities.

Click to learn more

💪 What Are Fine & Gross Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills involve the small muscles in our hands and fingers—used for writing, buttoning, or using utensils.
Gross motor skills involve larger muscle groups—used for running, climbing, balance, and coordination.

When these skills are underdeveloped, children might find it difficult to keep up in class, participate in play, or complete daily tasks independently.

🌼 How Our OT Sessions Help

Our therapy sessions use movement, play, and real-world tasks to improve:

  • Handwriting, drawing, and pencil control
  • Balance, posture, and body awareness
  • Core strength and stability
  • Bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body)
  • Self-care skills (tying shoes, dressing, feeding)

We make therapy fun with obstacle courses, games, and sensory play that encourage natural learning.

🧩 Research & Trusted Resources

Research highlights that developing fine and gross motor skills through meaningful activity enhances learning, confidence, and well-being (HealthDirect).
By focusing on real-life function—not just exercise—we help children generalise their new skills into home and school life.

🌿 Support Beyond the Clinic

Our therapists provide home programs and school collaboration, ensuring children get consistent support in all environments.
Parents receive guidance and feedback to keep therapy going between sessions.

“We focus on progress, not perfection—helping children move freely, play confidently, and participate fully.”

School Readiness

Starting school is an exciting milestone—but it can also feel overwhelming for children and parents alike.
At The Capability Psychology & Wellness in South Brisbane, our School Readiness Occupational Therapy program helps children develop the skills, confidence, and emotional resilience they need to make a smooth transition to school life.

Click to learn more

🌼 What Is “School Readiness”?

School readiness goes beyond knowing letters and numbers—it’s about being emotionally, physically, and socially prepared to participate in a classroom environment.

From an occupational therapy perspective, school readiness means being able to:

  • Focus attention and follow instructions
  • Regulate emotions in a busy classroom
  • Sit upright and maintain posture during lessons
  • Hold a pencil and begin writing
  • Interact, share, and play with peers
  • Manage self-care tasks like toileting, dressing, and unpacking lunch

When children are supported in these areas before starting school, they’re more likely to feel secure, independent, and excited about learning.

“We want every child to walk into school feeling capable, calm, and confident.”

✋ How Occupational Therapy Builds School Readiness Skills

Our OT-led School Readiness Program is designed to meet each child where they are. Therapy sessions combine playful, hands-on activities with evidence-based strategies to help children thrive.

Areas We Focus On:

  • Fine motor skills: pencil grip, drawing, cutting, and writing
  • Gross motor skills: balance, posture, and core strength for sitting and movement
  • Sensory regulation: helping children manage stimulation and stay calm
  • Emotional awareness: identifying and coping with big feelings
  • Social skills: sharing, turn-taking, and group participation
  • Self-care: dressing, toileting, and managing routines independently

We also work closely with parents and educators to ensure skills carry over from the clinic to home and classroom environments.

🧩 Why School Readiness Matters

Research consistently shows that early preparation for school helps reduce anxiety, improve confidence, and support long-term academic and social success (Raising Children Network – Starting School).

By strengthening these foundational areas before school starts, we’re not just teaching skills—we’re building emotional resilience, focus, and adaptability.

💕 Our Approach at The Capability Psychology & Wellness

Our sessions are:

  • Playful and engaging – because children learn best when they’re having fun.
  • Neuroaffirming and inclusive – we celebrate each child’s unique way of learning.
  • Collaborative – parents are involved every step of the way.
  • Practical – strategies are designed to work in real-life routines.

“We see school readiness as more than preparation—it’s about nurturing confidence for life’s next big chapter.”

NDIS & Occupational Therapy

Navigating the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone.

At The Capability Psychology & Wellness, our experienced Occupational Therapists provide Functional Capacity Assessments and ongoing therapy to support individuals and families on their NDIS journey.

Click to learn more

🌱 What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A Functional Capacity Assessment evaluates how well a person can manage daily living tasks—like self-care, mobility, communication, and social participation.
The assessment helps identify support needs and informs NDIS funding recommendations.

Our OTs use these assessments to create a detailed, strengths-based picture of your abilities, goals, and environment.

🧭 How Our OTs Support You Through the NDIS

We provide:

  • Functional Capacity Reports for NDIS applications and plan reviews
  • Goal-setting and therapy planning to improve everyday function
  • Assistive technology recommendations (equipment, modifications, and tools)
  • Ongoing capacity-building sessions for independence and participation
  • Support coordination collaboration with your broader care team

We aim to make the process clear, empowering, and aligned with your goals—not just paperwork for funding.

“Our role is to help you live the life you want, with the supports you deserve.”

🏠 What Does Functional Capacity Look Like in Real Life?

It’s about everyday participation—being able to:

  • Cook a meal safely
  • Manage personal care
  • Use public transport
  • Participate in social activities
  • Engage in meaningful work or study

Occupational Therapy helps individuals build or regain these functional skills, often through a combination of therapy, environment adjustments, and adaptive strategies.

📘 Research & Resources

Recent reports show the demand for OT within NDIS is rapidly increasing, with a growing emphasis on functional capacity and community participation (NDIS – Therapeutic Supports).

Evidence also supports that person-centred, participation-based OT interventions improve independence and wellbeing (Occupational Therapy Australia – Research Foundation).

💛 Our Promise

We know that navigating NDIS processes can be stressful. That’s why our South Brisbane team takes the time to explain each step clearly, advocate for your needs, and ensure your plan truly reflects your goals and abilities.

“You are the expert in your life—our job is to help make it more accessible.”

“We bring therapy to your doorstep—because real progress happens where life does.”
